Together Bright enhances the bond between two close friends or relatives in two distant places, in a subtle yet meaningful manner. Each user can express how he/she feels to the other by changing the brightness of their own lamp. This will dim or brighten half of theirs and gets transmitted to half of the other’s lamp, through a Wi-Fi connection. This aims to stimulate live response, such as a visit or a phone call. Recycled plastic bags were used to create the structures of the Connected Lamps. By using a plastic fusion technique, the material hardens and forms organic shapes. Dried roots were given a second life to become Two Oaks. In the future, biomaterials such as mycelium and Chinese rice paper will be used for the base and shades of the lamp. The connected lamps concept is based on Chinese contemporary poet Shu Ting’s “To the Oak”: true relationships are like two oaks. Even if above ground they may seem apart, their roots are forever entwined. Even if they stand independently, they are forever connected.
